Graphite Pencil – Drawing Hand – Left

It’s not the pencil that draws, it is your hand. Whether drawing lines or inscribing words, the act of making marks lures ideas into the physical world. Hands perceive and reveal things that our eyes and conscious minds may never know. We discover things about ourselves and our thoughts by engaging the hand in a mark-making process.

These writing implements are  intricate functional art objects cast in graphite. Polymer is infused into the graphite keeping it from staining the writer’s hands. The process involves making an original, a specialized mold and compression and finished using traditional techniques. However, much of the process is a closely guarded secret. Graphite, made of carbon, not lead, is completely non-toxic. The piece wears very slowly and should sustain 7 to 9 years of daily writing.

Inspired by his reverence of Nature, and informed by his formal studies in Art and Science, San Francisco artist Agelio Batle has created this innovative sculptural writing element.  Natural graphite and smudge resistant compounds are fused in specialized forms under intense pressure.  Handcrafted, using new and old world techniques, each piece is meticulously fashioned using the innovative methods that Batle originated.  Any part writes, while it resists staining your hands.
